Young blood in Zim A squad

ENTERPRISING under-19 stars -wicketkeeper/batsman Ryan Murray, left arm quick Richard Ngarava and leg spinner Brandon Mavuta have been included in Zimbabwe Cricket’s youthful A-side squad that is set to clash against Afghanistan A .

Zimbabwe A will host Afghanistan A, who are expected to arrive today, in five One-Day games starting at Harare Sports Club this Friday.

The trio of Murray, Ngarava and Mavuta was part of the Zimbabwe Under-19 World Cup squad will be expected to prove their mettle and press for permanent calls to the national team set ups.

Also picked for this tour is batsman Ryan Burl who bounces back from a knee injury that kept him out of action since last year. Burl was injured while playing touch rugby in Zimbabwe camp ahead of an ODI series against India.

A glance at the Zimbabwe A squad shows that selectors opted for young and upcoming players –a sign which shows that Zimbabwe Cricket are now laying the foundation for the next generation of players and also looking beyond the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

The Zimbabwe A squad is being coached by Douglas Hondo who is assisted by Wayne James. The technical department also comprises of fielding coach in Walter Chawaguta and Walter Karimanzira who is the fitness trainer.

Meanwhile, the A-side series will be precursor to the One Day International series between Zimbabwe and Afghanistan that is set to take place in Harare on February 17, 19, 22, 24 and 26.
