Twine Phiri (R)

FORMER CAPS United FC boss, Twine Phiri, was yesterday spared prison term for failing to pay maintenance for the upkeep of his three children.

Phiri was slapped with a wholly suspended 10-month jail term after he accrued a US$20 000 debt in maintenance.

Magistrate Lazini Ncube suspended the jail term on condition that he settles the debt on or before May 30 this year.

Phiri also escaped with a wholly suspended four-month jail term for failing to pay maintenance and accruing a US$1 226 debt.

He appeared before magistrate Joy Chikodzore, who suspended the four month-jail term for five years on condition that he deposits US$1 226 into his wife, Keresiya Phiri’s account.

But the court ordered Phiri to deposit US$500 forthwith towards the settlement of his maintenance arrears.

Phiri was taken to court after his Keresiya Phiri complained that he was not paying maintenance as per court order.
