HBA titans in top table clash

31 March 2017

Harare City Hornets

A full house is expected at Richwood Park as heavyweights Jewels Basketball Club (JBC) and Harare City Hornets clash in a top table Harare Basketball Association Men’s A League fixture on Saturday.

The match starts at 8pm.

This match is an absolute cracker that will heavily influence standings on points table and determine the course of the HBA championship race which also involves Mufakose Hustlers.

JBC are on pole position with 35 points from 19 games and so is second placed Mufakose Hustlers with similar stats but separated by points difference.

On third spot lies City Hornets that have amassed 33 points but having two more games in hand. This creates an intriguing triangular chase for the HBA title.

For JBC, clashing with City Hornets at this juncture might probably be the best time as it gives them an opportunity to make things right on their side and continue gripping the top spot.

Literally, JBC have destiny in their hands and it’s a matter of them taking care of their processes.

On the other hand, City Hornets have all their stars in for this crunch encounter and they realise there are no longer points and games to waste.

Having won two trophies this season already, the HBA league is what City Hornets wants the most hence they will literally sting at everything in their way.

Some believe this is a title decider for City Hornets as JBC appears to be the only big gun left in their path.

While the JBC and City Hornets match is the game of the week, Mufakose Hustlers play eighth-placed Cheetahs early on. Hustlers will probably follow this match with hefty interest.

Meanwhile, the qualification race for the Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ) National Championships is hotting up and the battle is between Raiders HLF Academy, Foxes and Glen View Rockets.

Normally, four teams from HBA A League qualify for the club championships set for Harare from April 29 to May 1. However, BUZ are yet to confirm participation for this year’s edition.

With JBC, Mufakose Hustlers and City Hornets presumably occupying the top three places already, it only means Raiders HLF Academy, Foxes and Glen View Rockets will be fighting for the one slot.

But this is basketball, as the ball bounces and rolls on the court, it can only be over when it’s over.
