BULAWAYO – A pedestrian died and two other people were injured after an out-of-control ZUPCO bus ploughed into a crowd near Pick & Pay Hyper in Bulawayo on Monday.
The victim is a female security guard who was standing on the pavement with her husband.
Witnesses said the bus driver was speeding in the Nots and Sons bus operating a ZUPCO service.
The accident happened near the Government Dental Clinic on Herbert Chitepo between 10th and 11th Avenues at around 5PM.
Witnesses said the bus “came in too hot” at a bus rank near the supermarket chain.
“There was another bus there and the Nots & Sons driver was trying to avoid crashing into it. He climbed the pavement, took out a pole and unfortunately also hit four by-standers, including the woman who tragically died on the spot,” a witness said.
The woman was standing next to her husband, who was unhurt.
Paramedics treated the injured at the scene before they were ferried to hospital. The unnamed woman’s husband battled tears as he gave a witness statement to police.
