Grief as minors, 2, die from water burns, drowning

LUPANE – Two minors, both aged two years, died from water burns and drowning in separate incidents that happened in Lupane and Gwelutshena Thursday.

In the first incident, a Lupane minor died from burns sustained after a five-year-old child attempted to remove a bucket of hot water from the stove.

Police confirmed the sad incident via their social media communication channels.

“On 23/02/23, a two year old minor succumbed to hot water burns which he incurred from an accident that happened at Sibangani Village 2 in Lupane when another child (5) tried to remove a tin of boiling water from the stove.

“The mother of the children (37) had left the children alone and went to the garden,” police said.

In another incident that happened same day, a two-year-old minor drowned in a shallow well at Wakufa Village, Gwelutshena whilst playing alone.

The 29-year-old mother of the child, according to police, later checked for the minor and was shocked to find the child’s lifeless body submerged in water and legs stuck in the mud.

Following the incidents, police urged “parents and guardians to always ensure the safety and security of children”.
