Guards, dozen workers tied with shoelaces as robbers seize US$32k in company heist

BULAWAYO – Armed robbers stormed a Bulawayo company carrying pistols and a pick, making off with US$32,500 plus ZAR300 after tying some security guards and a dozen workers with shoelaces.

In a statement Thursday, police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident which happened on 15 October in Belmont, Bulawayo where “US$32,500 and ZAR 300 cash were stolen after seven unknown male suspects, armed with pistols and a pick, stormed at steel company”.

“The suspects tied two security guards and 12 workers, who were on duty, with shoelaces,” said the police spokesperson.

“One of the workers was struck on the head with a pick after attempting to escape. The suspects confiscated valuables and cell phones before stealing the cash.”

Nyathi appealed to anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact their nearest police station.

The incident comes on the heels of the country’s biggest ever heist in which over US$4 million was seized from an Ecobank branch in Bulawayo by armed robbers when it was being loaded into a waiting cash-in-transit van recently.

On Wednesday, US$20,000 was stolen from a Fawcett security cash-in-transit van after guards who were transporting the cash from Beitbridge to Mutare had offered a lift to two strangers.
