MORE than 2 500 pupils are expected to attend this year’s Children’s Party in Matabeleland South Province, with the host province providing the bulk of delegates.

The event will be held on April 17, 2026, the eve of the country’s Independence Day commemorations.

The annual party, hosted by the First Family, offers children a unique opportunity to interact with the First Family and hear an address from President Mnangagwa.

It stands as a major national gathering for learners to celebrate youth, culture and unity.

In an interview, Primary and Secondary Education Deputy Minister Angeline Gata said preparations were well under way, with logistical arrangements now in place.

She said the party will be held at Mahetshe Primary School in Matabeleland South.

“As the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, we have some responsibilities on both days, but on the 17th it’s actually our main one, which is hosted by the First Family. This has been the culture and we are also doing it this year,” she said.

“We will have children from all the 10 provinces to attend in Matabeleland South province. We will have the biggest number of delegates coming from the host province, but other provinces will have 50 children from each of them.”

Deputy Minister Gata said the event remains one of the most important gatherings bringing together children from diverse backgrounds.

Each province will send 50 students — 250 girls and 250 boys in total — while the host province will contribute at least 2 000 participants drawn from its districts.

Delegates will be accompanied by two chaperones and two police officers per province, led by the provincial schools inspector for physical education, sport and mass displays.

“We are so particular about our children and their safety. So this is why you see that we have police officers helping transporting them to the venue. There will also be child parliamentarians, child councillors and pupils with disabilities,” she said.

She added that logistical issues such as accommodation had already been finalised.

Deputy Minister Gata said beyond entertainment, the event instils patriotism and a sense of recognition among learners.

“The children’s party in Zimbabwe offers several benefits to pupils, that include a sense of community, a sense of belonging and an opportunity to interact. More importantly, the First Lady (Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa will bring all sorts of project initiatives,” she said.

“It complements our heritage-based curriculum in schools, and also promotes physical fitness, cultural awareness, discipline and patriotism — who we are as Zimbabweans, what we stand for as Zimbabweans.”
