2 children die, 11 hospitalised after drinking traditional beer

MASVINGO – Two children have died and 11 others are critically ill after suspected food poisoning at a traditional beer ceremony in Mashava on Sunday, police said.

The victims reportedly developed severe stomach pains after eating sadza/isitshwala and drinking masese during the traditional ritual on October 27.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the two deceased were aged three and seven.

“Four children and seven adults are currently in critical condition at Masvingo General Hospital, while three others are receiving treatment at Mashava Clinic,” Nyathi said.

He added that investigations into the incident were underway and more details would be released in due course.
