ZVISHAVANE – Police have confirmed the tragic death of five family members in Gudhuza Village, Zvishavane, after they reportedly used a charcoal brazier overnight to keep warm.
According to police, the incident occurred on the night of July 20, 2025, when the victims brought a brazier into their bedroom, unaware of the dangers posed by carbon monoxide poisoning in an enclosed space.
The deceased were identified as Jeremiah Simango, 42, John Ncube, 57, Nigel Ncube, Denzel Simango, 15, and Joedire Simango, 8.
All five bodies have since been taken to Zvishavane District Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
Authorities have warned members of the public against the use of charcoal braziers and similar heating devices in poorly ventilated rooms, especially during cold weather, due to the risk of suffocation and poisoning.
The ZRP expressed condolences to the bereaved family and urged communities to prioritise safety when using heating appliances.
