BULAWAYO – A 29-year-old woman from Fort Rixon, Matabeleland South, poured acid on her friend accusing her of having an affair with her husband, a court heard.
Sithulisile Nyoni pleaded guilty to assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm when she appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Eva Matura on Tuesday.
Twenty six-year-old Berlinda Mkandla was the victim of the May 28, 2025, attack at Pioneer Village 1 Business Centre.
Mufaro Ndirayire, for the National Prosecuting Authority, said Nyoni approached Mkandla, who was working as a shop assistant, at around 8PM and confronted her over an alleged romantic relationship with her husband.
In a fit of rage, she poured acid on Mkandla’s face and right thigh. Mkandla sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital as police were called.
The two women were reportedly friends prior to the incident.
In mitigation, Nyoni admitted to the offence and told the court she was prepared to pay for Mkandla’s medical bills totalling US$1,000.
Nyoni was remanded to June 25 for sentencing after entering a guilty plea to a charge of assault with intent to cause bodily harm.
