The fire reportedly originated at a wholesale shop and moved to other businesses which it completely destroyed.

A FIRE that erupted at the Lions’ Den shopping centre near Chinhoyi resulted in the destruction of multiple shops on Sunday afternoon, with the inferno proving difficult to control due to a severe water shortage that hampered efforts by local fire fighters to dowse it.

The fire reportedly originated at a wholesale shop and moved to other businesses which it completely destroyed.

Makonde Rural District Council chairperson Misheck Nyarubero confirmed the dire situation.

“Our fire brigade ran out of water,” he said.

“They have gone to Reinfield Farm Dam to collect more water, but they are taking longer than expected.”

Nyarubero said the fire brigade from Chinhoyi also ran out of water before the fire could be extinguished.

Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson Inspector Ian Kohwera said no one was injured, adding that the cause of fire was yet to be established.

“From preliminary reports, no one was injured and the source of the fire is yet to be established. Investigations are underway,” he said.

Local residents expressed frustration over the inefficiency of fire fighters.

“Our fire brigade is dysfunctional,” one resident said.

“They could not help and even the assistance from Chinhoyi was insufficient.”

The incident has underscored vulnerabilities within disaster management systems, particularly in times of crisis.

Amid the chaos some unscrupulous individuals chose to loot groceries and gadgets from the burning shops.
