Isaac Mpofu stakes claim as Zimbabwe’s greatest marathoner

TOKYO, Japan – Isaac Mpofu underlined his remarkable consistency on the global stage with another superb run at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Sunday morning, finishing 10th in the men’s marathon.

The 33-year-old repeated the top-10 finish he achieved at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, United States. Since then, he has placed 15th at the 2023 edition in Budapest and 19th at the 2024 Paris Olympics — results that place him among the most reliable performers in one of athletics’ most punishing events.

For Zimbabwe, Mpofu’s achievements mark a new standard in marathon running. The country has produced notable distance athletes before — such as Tapfumaneyi Jonga, who won the 1981 London Marathon, and Cuthbert Nyasango, who placed 7th in the marathon at the 2012 London Olympics — but neither managed the sustained consistency at the highest level that Mpofu has demonstrated.

His back-to-back top-10 finishes at the World Championships now arguably make him Zimbabwe’s greatest-ever marathon runner, a quiet yet enduring figure in a discipline dominated by East Africans.
