The Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency and the Zimbabwe Environmental Law Organisation have signed a landmark collaboration agreement aimed at enhancing natural resource governance and promoting responsible and sustainable investments in the country.

ZIDA said the key highlights of the collaboration included conducting joint research and policy advocacy initiatives, exchanging information on legislative developments and investment-related issues and organising joint capacity development initiatives on resource governance in Zimbabwe.

“This MoU reflects a shared vision to align investment promotion with environmental justice, ensuring that Zimbabwe’s development is both inclusive and sustainable,” said the agency.

In an interview, ZELO deputy director, Mr Shamiso Mtisi, said the collaboration with ZIDA was key to promoting responsible and sustainable investments in the country.

“This partnership is key to enhancing investment in the country for the growth of the national economy.

“We will ensure investors get information on mining and agriculture, among other sectors, so that they can comply with responsible investment standards to safeguard natural resources,” he said.

He explained that the two organisations had areas of common interest and joining forces was key to attracting responsible investment.

Mr Mtisi said the agreement solidifies their shared commitment to ensuring that all investments in Zimbabwe are responsible, sustainable, and uphold environmental justice.

“By working together on policy, research, and capacity building, we aim to champion a future where economic growth and environmental stewardship go hand-in-hand for the benefit of all Zimbabweans.”

He said ZELO was implementing several initiatives to advance environmental justice, promote sustainable natural resource management, and protect communities’ rights in Zimbabwe and Southern Africa.

Mr Mtisi added that the organisation was working at the intersection of law, policy, and community empowerment, while focusing on areas like responsible mining and addressing the impacts of projects on communities.

ZIDA is Zimbabwe’s one-stop shop for investors, offering a range of services that help investors realise their goals from their first time entry to expansion of existing operations.

It promotes, plans and implements investment promotion strategies, facilitates investor entry and implementation of investor plans, as well as establishes and regulates Special Economic Zones (SEZ).

ZIDA also promotes, reviews and recommends public-private partnerships (PPPs), providing aftercare and monitoring to investors as it encourages investment into Zimbabwe.

ZELO (formerly known as the Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association – ZELA) is a Zimbabwean public interest environmental law organisation whose evolution has sought to strengthen its impact by aligning with global non-profit trends and national legal requirements, enhancing operational flexibility, credibility, and the ability to serve communities in promoting environmental justice and sustainable natural resource management.
