Medical doctor, 49, arrested for methamphetamine possession in police raid

GWERU – A 49-year-old medical doctor has appeared in court in Gweru charged with possession and use of the drug methamphetamine, commonly known as mutoriro.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe said Farikai Manjeya, a specialist obstetrician and gynaecologist at Gweru Provincial Hospital, was arrested with three others – Tafara Chigoya, 28, Kudakwashe Godknows Mutata, 29, and Tariro Pambwa, 35, on November 9 after detectives raided doctors’ cottages, acting on a tip-off about drug activity.

“Detectives found the four accused persons allegedly smoking crystal meth using J-pipes and cigarette lighters, which led to their immediate arrest,” the NPA said in a statement on Wednesday.

“The J-pipes, cigarette lighter and an empty sachet were seized.”

Manjeya and his three co-accused were charged with possession of dangerous drugs and remanded in custody pending a bail hearing.

The NPA urged communities to cooperate with law enforcement in reporting drug abuse cases to help safeguard young people and the wider society.

Zimbabwe has seen a surge in methamphetamine use in recent years, with authorities describing the drug, popularly called mutoriro, as one of the most destructive substances affecting communities across the country.
