Self-styled ‘King Munhumutapa’ jailed for undermining ‘president’s authority’

HARARE – A 58-year-old man who styled himself as “King Munhumutapa” has been jailed for an effective eight months after a Harare magistrate convicted him of undermining the authority of the president.

Timothy Chiminya was accused of appointing himself “King Munhumutapa” and attempting to install or depose traditional leaders between 2019 and December 2024.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Chiminya claimed to have replaced the duly recognised Chief Seke and sought to remove Chief Nyakunhuwa in favour of a candidate of his choice.

The ministry of local government warned him in February 2022 to stop his activities, but he continued until his arrest.

He was sentenced to 10 months in prison, two of which were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour, leaving him to serve an effective eight months.

The NPA said Chiminya’s conduct “directly challenged the executive authority vested in the president,” who constitutionally appoints traditional leaders through the ministry of local government.
