Mum killed daughter, 3, to clear path for marriage: police

CHIREDZI – Police have arrested a 35-year-old woman in Mkwasine, Masvingo province, for allegedly killing her three-year-old daughter in what police say was an attempt to clear the way to marry her new boyfriend.

Police said Fadzai Geviza, of Village 2 in Fair Range, allegedly stabbed the child on the neck with a knife on November 25.

After the incident, Fadzai allegedly gave conflicting accounts of what had happened — first telling a neighbour that the girl had been attacked by four unknown assailants, and later informing the village head that the child had died of natural causes.

Suspicion was raised during burial preparations when mourners noticed a deep cut on the child’s neck. A report was made to ZRP Mkwasine, leading to her arrest.

National police spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi said: “Police investigations established that the suspect allegedly killed her daughter so that she could marry her new boyfriend, who was unwilling to marry her while she had a child.”

The child’s body was taken to Chiredzi General Hospital for a post-mortem, and investigations are ongoing.
