Kembo Mohadi to hand over Highlanders’ new team bus – a gift from Chivayo

BULAWAYO – As Highlanders mark their centenary this year, the club is set to receive a new team bus befitting its 100-year legacy, even as debate continues among supporters over the influence of its benefactor.

Controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo has followed through on his pledge to donate a brand-new 75-seater Higer bus to the country’s oldest football club, adding to a US$300,000 cash injection meant to bolster the club’s preparations for the season.

The bus is expected to be officially handed over on Tuesday at a ceremony to be presided over by Vice President Kembo Mohadi.

Chivayo’s growing prominence at Bosso has split opinion among supporters, with some questioning the motives of the Zanu PF-linked businessman and the extent of his involvement in club affairs.

The unease intensified recently after Highlanders abruptly reversed the appointment of South African coach Thabo Senong, instead naming former Warriors captain Benjani Mwaruwari as head coach, a move widely attributed to Chivayo’s recommendation.

Chivayo has rejected suggestions that he is seeking to take over the club, insisting he is merely assisting Highlanders in his capacity as a committed supporter.

The new luxuriously-fitted team bus is a major step-up from the current bus handed over to the club by Nyaradzo Funeral Assurance in 2015.
