BULAWAYO woke up to a spooky sermon in street justice this week after a would-be hard man learned the hard way that some places come with extra security. Not cameras, not alarms, but ancestors.
Clifford Desmond Nare (34) of Cowdray Park is now officially a long-term resident of the State after pulling a midnight madness special at Kings and Queens Funeral Services in Kelvin North. The job went down at about 11.30 pm on 1 February 2025.
Nare and his crew rocked up armed to the teeth with pistols and, of all things, a silver sword. Apparently, because when you are robbing a funeral parlour, why not add medieval energy? They pistol-whipped a security guard above the right eye, frog-marched two guards to the backyard and tied them up with their own shoelaces.
While Nare played lookout, the crew climbed in through a window and scooped up cash and gadgets. They got away with US$3 608, R1 130, a Huawei Y62 phone worth US$110 and an Exide battery worth USD$80. The total damage was big enough to make even the spirits sit up straight.
Then the curse kicked in.
Two accomplices, Sipho Ncube and Dumisani Ndlovu, are now deceased. Another one, Cordias Nkomo, is still on the run, probably wishing he had eyes at the back of his head and checking shadows twice. As for Nare, the Tredgold Regional Magistrates Court slammed the gate shut with a nine-year sentence for armed robbery.
You can fight guards, you can break windows, but mess with a funeral parlour and the underground gang does not play. They do not warn. They collect.
Commenting on the case, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) warned that armed robbery is a serious crime and courts are not laughing. Weapons plus violence equals heavy time. Ask Nare. Or ask for silence from his former crew.
It is important to respect property, respect the living and above all, do not rob where the dead are already watching.
