THE Johane Marange Apostolic Church is making strides in community development by constructing a secondary school in Ward 14 of Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe district.

This initiative is part of the sect’s ongoing commitment to positively impact local communities.

The groundbreaking ceremony for St Arnold 3 Secondary School recently took place in Uzumba, attracting thousands of delegates.

High Priest St Nimrod Taguta Momberume and the Provincial Education director for Mashonaland East Mrs Anatoria Ncube, represented by District Schools Inspector for Murehwa, Mrs Christine Tsodzo, attended the ground breaking ceremony.

Previously, the sect had established St Arnold 3 Primary School in the same ward, which will serve as a feeder school for the new secondary school.

Completed last year, the primary school has an enrolment of 724 learners, supported by a team of 26 teachers.

Speaking at the launch, Mrs Ncube applauded the church’s efforts in addressing the district’s shortage of schools.

“In 2023, Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe district had a deficit of 35 schools and we managed to reduce the deficit through the establishment of six schools,” she said.

“The schools were built and established by mostly private players and the Johane Marange Apostolic Church was not an exception.

“I am sincerely happy with the High Priest (St Nimrod) present here today. Your vision in establishing schools in Mashonaland East is highly appreciated.

“I have no doubt in my mind that it is a matter of time before more schools come our way. The new school, whose ground-breaking is being done today, is laying a firm foundation for a school whose enrolment will never be shacky, the feeder primary school is a force to reckon with already, with an enrolment of 724 learners.”

The church’s education secretary, Mr Cuthbert Rungwe, expressed pride in their contributions to the education sector.

“We are happy to be doing this and as a church, we have always been looked down upon, with many believing that we don’t value education, but here we are, building schools to show our commitment to improving the quality of education in Zimbabwe.

“We want to thank the Government for the support. We really appreciate all the Government institutions for their overwhelming support.

“Currently, we have established 38 schools which are operating in Zimbabwe. We have 24 other schools under construction and at various stages of completion.”

Mr Rungwe added that they are also establishing schools outside the country.

“We have two schools operating in Mozambique, and eight are still under construction. We are also constructing two schools in Zambia and we plan to open them this year.

“Plans are at an advanced stage to build schools in Angola, Malawi and the Democratic Republic of Congo,” he said.

UMP council chairman, Councillor Silence Zimowa, said he was happy with the developments.
