GWANDA — A man has been charged with culpable homicide following the fatal shooting of a bystander during an attempt to slaughter a bull in Gwanda district.
Dumisani Nyathi, 61, appeared before the Gwanda Magistrates Court on Monday and was remanded in custody.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority, the incident occurred on February 21 in Lushongwe area.
Prosecutors allege that Khonzani Sibanda, a local butcher, travelled to Thuli Farm in Makwe to collect the bull before transporting it to Lushongwe, where it was to be slaughtered. Nyathi had been tasked with shooting the animal.
The bull was allegedly tied to a tree with a rope but suddenly broke free, charging towards people who had gathered at the scene.
In the ensuing commotion, Nyathi – who was armed with a shotgun – allegedly fired at the animal but missed. The shot instead struck 47-year-old Butholezwe Sibanda in the chest.
Sibanda died on the spot.
