YOUNG people on the African continent must take a leaf from African luminaries like the late Dr Kwame Nkrumah who sacrificed everything for the independence of the African States, President Mnangagwa has said.

The President said this yesterday after visiting the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park where the remains of the Ghanaian founding father are interred.

President Mnangagwa, whose generation was inspired by the likes of Dr Nkrumah, said it was an inspiring moment to visit the Park.

“I feel extremely inspired and informed by visiting this site. When we grew up,  I remember when we were at secondary school, Ghana became independent and we were told that an African country had become independent and the Prime Minister was Kwame Nkrumah, so they showed us what he was wearing, a wrapping cloth. We took our bed sheets and wrapped them around our bodies at the dormitories and we were punished, that was around 1957.

“So, I am so delighted that I was able to visit this place,” said the President.

President Mnangagwa said Dr Nkrumah lived a life not for Ghana but for Africa.

“We were all inspired by Dr Nkrumah. We are all inspired by what he did for Africa in Southern Africa. He was our hero,” he said.

Apart from touring the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, the President also visited Accra Compost and Recycling Plant, a similar project to the Geo Pomona  Waste Management in Harare, as the two countries seek to deepen ties in various areas for economic development.

“We have a similar plant in Zimbabwe and I have been impressed at the levels of modernisation,” he said.

President Mnangagwa also had business engagements after a hectic day where he, along with his counterpart President John Dramani Mahama, signed several agreements for greater cooperation.
