CAPS United show title hunt no fluke as they break Highlanders jinx

Highlanders 1-2 CAPS United

BULAWAYO – CAPS United ended an 11-year wait for victory at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday, defeating Highlanders to underline their credentials in the title race.

United were dominant from the outset, scoring in each half to take control of the contest and extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to four points over Hardrock.

Highlanders survived an early scare when Talent Chamboko nearly capitalised on a spill by goalkeeper Aaron Ngwenya, but his clipped effort crashed against the crossbar.

Kudzai Chigwida broke the deadlock in the 36th minute, timing his run perfectly to get behind the defence and meet a well-delivered free-kick from Chamboko.

Lloyd Njaliwa doubled the visitors’ advantage in the 56th minute, rising to meet a Brian Kadamanja cross, with his header going in off the upright beyond Ngwenya.

Darlington Mukuli pulled one back in the 74th minute to spark hopes of a Highlanders comeback, but CAPS United’s resolute defence stood firm to see out the victory – also inflicting Highlanders’ first league defeat under Benjani Mwaruwari.

After the match, CAPS United coach Takesure Chiragwi said: “We recognised their strength out wide and made sure to keep our balance while looking to hit them on the counter. That’s what we did.”

Dynamos, unbeaten since July last year, fluffed their lines time and time again in front of goal as they were held 0-0 by ZPC Kariba at Rufaro.

The draw left them five points adrift of United.
