AT least 105 lower division teams from Mashonaland West Province will face off in qualifiers for the US$25 million Munhumutapa Challenge Cup.

Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Marian Chombo conducted the draw for the Division 2 regional teams in the province this morning.

At least 65 Division 2 teams were paired in a draw that will see teams competing in their regions.

Minister Chombo hailed President Mnangagwa for the mega knockout competition.

“This competition is being supported at the highest level, and we know that our President knew that through football, we will be able to reach our youths,” said Minister Chombo.

“This event provides a platform to tackle issues such as drug and substance abuse. It uses a rotational format in line with the Devolution agenda, ensuring that no one and no place is left behind.”

She said the Challenge Cup would help strengthen sports development in the province.

ZIFA chairman Derrick Matapura said the Challenge Cup was key in the development of grassroots football.

“This is a move that will help empower our football players, supporters and communities. I am happy that the President saw it fit to support football development through the financial support,” he said.

Provincial Sports, Arts and Recreational director Mr Reward Shockson said the tournament helped in grassroots football development and talent identification for strengthening the country’s national teams.

The draw was attended by representatives from ZIFA, clubs in the province and government officials.
