The Municipality of Redcliff recently issued a stern ultimatum demanding that property owners immediately rectify dilapidated structures or face severe legal sanctions, including fines and imprisonment.

Civic pride and public health standards are undeniably vital. But there is something deeply unsettling about a local authority aggressively enforcing compliance on its constituency while abysmally failing to uphold its own fundamental mandates.
For years, the people of Redcliff have endured a catastrophic decline in basic amenities, creating a stark paradox: a council that demands absolute accountability from citizens while offering none in return. The physical evidence of council negligence is written across every corner of our town.
Roads that have gone unmaintained for decades are now dangerously riddled with rim-shattering potholes, while on many stretches, the asphalt has completely vanished, leaving residents to navigate suffocating clouds of dust daily.
As night falls, whole streets are plunged into pitch darkness because broken streetlights remain neglected for years, effectively transforming residential neighborhoods into free-roaming havens for housebreakers and muggers.
Refuse collection has become so sporadic and unreliable that Redcliff increasingly resembles one giant, overflowing garbage dump, posing a constant, severe health hazard to families. Most damning of all, however, is the catastrophic water crisis that plagues our community. Redcliff has not enjoyed consistent, reliable running water for nearly a decade, plunging households into perpetual distress.
Those fortunate enough to afford it have been forced to fork out thousands of hard-earned dollars to drill private boreholes on their premises, effectively building private infrastructure to replace public failure. Meanwhile, the vast majority of residents must queue for agonizing hours at communal boreholes or rely on the generous charity of neighbors simply to satisfy basic human needs.
Whenever pressed on these pervasive failures, municipal officials offer an endless parade of weak, recycled excuses that fail to stand up to basic scrutiny. What makes this administrative decay truly intolerable is the glaring contrast between the council’s public austerity excuses and the private opulence enjoyed by its leadership. While basic services crumble into non-existence, senior officials appear preoccupied with their own personal aggrandizement, securing generous perk packages and cruising through battered, potholed streets in expensive luxury vehicles.
This apparent mismanagement is far from mere speculation. The Auditor-General has previously flagged the local authority over transactions that raised serious legal and financial questions. Compounding this environmental and civic crisis is the council’s inexplicable decision to permit gold mining operations right alongside residential properties and directly opposite our critical water reservoir.
Massive underground blasts shudder through the town, reportedly causing structural cracks in nearby homes, while open-cast activities envelope entire neighborhoods in dense clouds of dust. Operating so dangerously close to a vital water body poses an immediate, existential threat of toxic chemical contamination and severe environmental degradation that directly jeopardizes the long-term health of every resident.
Yet, despite the rapid, lucrative extraction of our precious resources, there is zero visible benefit accruing to the municipality or its people. Redcliff is left with all the pollution, noise, structural damage, and health hazards, prompting a urgent question: who exactly is benefiting from our gold? For those of us who have religiously paid our municipal rates month after month, patience has finally run out.
A social contract is a reciprocal arrangement rooted in mutual duty, not a one-way financial extraction mechanism. It is entirely insincere for a council to threaten residents with legal action over cracked walls or unkempt yards while presiding over collapsing roads, bone-dry taps, rampant pollution, and systemic neglect.
Until the local authority demonstrates basic competence, transparency, and a genuine commitment to restoring core public services, ratepayers are fully justified in withholding their financial support. The principle going forward is simple, uncompromising, and urgent: no service to residents, no money from residents.
