Two Chitungwiza women have appeared before Harare magistrate Sharon Rakafa facing three counts of stealing gadgets from an Apostolic Faith Church (AFM) Church in Dzivarasekwa Extension.

Glory Choto (50) and Violet Jaure (34) were convicted on all three counts of theft after magistrate Rakafa ruled that the State had managed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The magistrate said there was overwhelming evidence in the matter, as State witnesses submitted tangible proof against the accused persons.

The convicts, both unemployed, reside at 305 Nyatsime Phase 2 in Chitungwiza.

The complainant is employed by the Zimbabwe National Army.

State prosecutor Chyvonne Nhira told the court that on October 5 this year, at the AFM Church in Dzivarasekwa Extension, the pair stole a laptop bag containing a Lenovo mini laptop, a black power bank, a black diary, cash books, three counter books and a flash drive.

The State said the convicts took advantage of unattended property and stole it after the complainant had stepped outside the church to answer a phone call.

The pair was later arrested after being caught stealing from a car at a Methodist church in Dzivarasekwa, Harare.

In another incident, the convicts stole a black and cream dress, a royal blue jersey, a blue and white doek, and baby diapers from a car belonging to Tafadzwa Chifamba, a Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority employee.

Court papers show that sometime in October this year, Chifamba attended a church service at United Methodist Church in Dzivarasekwa 1, Harare.

Prosecutor Nhira said Chifamba parked her Toyota RunX outside the church and left.

The convicts again took advantage of the complainant’s absence and stole the items.

During the trial, the State argued that some congregants noticed the pair behaving suspiciously, which led to a search.

Church members discovered that the women were in possession of Chifamba’s belongings, resulting in their arrest.
