Seasoned politician Cde Thamson Lamula Ndou emerged victorious in the ZANU PF primary elections held in Ward 14 on Friday, securing the ruling party’s nomination to represent the ward in the forthcoming by-elections on February 21.
The seat, which falls under the Beitbridge Rural District Council, became vacant following the passing of Councillor Milton Ndou in December.
Cde Ndou will now stand as the ZANU PF candidate in the by-election, vying for the seat in one of the biggest and most strategic wards, which covers mostly resettlement areas under the BBRDC.
The primary elections, which were conducted at seven polling centres, saw five candidates contesting for the party’s nomination.
Cde Ndou was victorious after polling 162 ballots against Cdes Amson Muleya (65), Charles Moyo (68), Reason Moyo (78) and Simon Mdlongwa (56).
Most people failed to turn up at the polling centres as it rained from midday until late in the evening across the district.
The by-election is scheduled to take place on February 21, and Cde Ndou’s victory marks a significant step in the party’s bid to retain the seat.
Gwanda District Coordinating Committee chairperson Cde David Linda, who oversaw the voting process, said, “The voting is proceeding in line with ZANU PF’s democratic processes.”
He said the exercise reflects the party’s commitment to internal democracy and orderly candidate selection.
In a post-elections interview, Cde Ndou thanked party members for having faith in him, adding that the success and development of projects in the ward will largely depend on community engagement and consultations.
“I want to thank everyone who voted and the party for holding a peaceful and orderly candidates’ selection process. The primary elections are over. It’s now time to work together and develop our ward and community,” said Cde Ndou.
“So my plan going forward is to engage more with community members through continuous engagements. We can only succeed if we move along with a shared vision and common purpose.
“At the same time, we will make sure that we carry forward the ongoing development projects that were initiated by our late Cde (Cllr Milton Ndou).”
