HARARE – A 52-year-old Chinese national was arrested at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport after allegedly indecently assaulting a female passenger during an Emirates flight from Dubai, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said.
Li Youbin was taken into custody on November 21 upon landing on Emirates flight EK713 following reports that he assaulted a woman seated next to him.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority, the incident occurred around 9AM Dubai time while the two passengers were seated together, with the complainant by the window.
Li allegedly attempted to initiate conversation, and when the woman showed no interest, he is said to have touched her thighs and buttocks. She reportedly screamed for help, prompting flight attendants to intervene and ensure her safety for the remainder of the journey.
When the aircraft landed in Harare at around 5PM, the matter was reported to airport police, leading to Li’s immediate arrest.
Prosecutors have opposed bail, arguing that Li poses a flight risk.
Investigations are expected to be completed by December 1, according to the NPA.
The authority warned that crimes committed aboard aircraft will be treated with the same seriousness as offences on the ground.
“Aircraft cabins are not law-free spaces. Any offender, local or foreign, will face the full force of the law,” the NPA said.
