Chivayo splashes cars, releases final $500,000 of Highlanders sponsorship

BULAWAYO – Highlanders benefactor Wicknell Chivayo on Wednesday gifted vehicles to club chiefs and announced the release of the final US$500,000 tranche of his US$1 million sponsorship package unveiled last year.

The controversial businessman, who made his fortune from lucrative state contracts, said the latest disbursement completes his financial commitment to the Bulawayo giants as they prepare for the 2026 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season.

Last month, Chivayo had already released a further US$300,000 earmarked for player recruitment and the settlement of outstanding signing-on fees, including obligations linked to newly-appointed coach Benjani Mwaruwari.

Writing on X, Chivayo said Toyota Fortuner vehicles were ready for collection by Highlanders chairman Luke Mnkandla, chief executive officer Denzil Mnkandla and club legend Madinda Ndlovu. Mwaruwari has been allocated a 2026 Ford Everest valued at approximately US$92,000.

Jabulani Nkomo, described as Chivayo’s point person in engagements with the club, received US$10,000 in what Chivayo called “pocket money”, while Nkomo’s wife, Busi, was also allocated US$10,000.

“A motivated and well-led team will always deliver results,” Chivayo said. “It is my sincere hope and expectation that, with such financial support, the club will be able to sign new players and adequately motivate the current players by attending to their welfare and needs. The club must now focus on delivering results and ensure that the 2026 season is a resounding success.”

The financial boost comes as Highlanders look to rebuild after a difficult 2025 campaign in which they flirted with relegation before finishing 11th, just two points above the drop zone.

Bosso showed early promise ahead of the new season by beating Dynamos 1-0 in the Jairos Jiri Cup final last Sunday.

The Premier Soccer League season kicks off on the weekend of March 6-8. Highlanders open their campaign against newly-promoted Bulawayo Chiefs at Barbourfields Stadium before travelling to face Dynamos and then hosting MWOS in their third fixture.
