THE Marange woman whose video is circulating online while brutally assaulting her daughter with her hands and legs tied has pleaded guilty to ill-treating her child and will be sentenced on Wednesday.
The 27-year-old woman from Mt Zonwe in Odzi, appeared before Mutare provincial magistrate, Ms Annie Ndiraya, facing charges of ill-treatment and neglecting a child as defined in Section 7 (1) of the Child Protection Act, Chapter 05.06.
She did not waste the court’s time on her initial appearance last Saturday by pleading guilty to the charge.
Ms Ndiraya today adjourned the sentencing at the request of prosecutor, Mr Thurston Mubvumbi, who said the Department of Social Welfare is still to record the child’s victim impact statement, which is factored on sentencing. The woman who is not represented and is in custody appeared in court with a minor baby strapped on her back.
Mr Mubvumbi told the court that the mother was angered by the child’s refusal to wash dishes and went on to tie her hands and legs, before striking her several times with a sjambok.
“The accused is complainant’s mother. Sometime in July 2025 on the date, and time not known by the prosecutor, and at Mt Zonwe Village 28, Chief Marange, the accused person instructed the complainant to clean plates, but she refused. This angered the accused who started shouting at the complainant.
“The complainant tried to avoid the accused person by moving away from her. The accused person followed the complainant and apprehended her at a distance of about 100 metres. She tied the complainant’s hands and legs with torn cloths and assaulted her with a sjambok several times all over the body.
“The case came to light when the video circulated on social media resulting in the arrest of the accused person. The complaint sustained swollen back, legs, face and was not medically examined. The accused person acted unlawfully,” Mr Mubvumbi told the court.
