THE Environmental Management Agency (EMA) will significantly enhance its operational capacity following the addition of 15 single-cab 4×4 vehicles to improve the efficiency and responsiveness of the agency’s staff across the country.
The fleet was officially commissioned by Environment, Climate and Wildlife Minister Dr Evelyn Ndlovu at a ceremony in Harare yesterday, underscoring the Government’s commitment to strengthening EMA’s operations.
Minister Ndlovu said the delivery followed the addition six months ago of another 15 single cabs and two double cabs, highlighting ongoing efforts to bolster institutional capacity through essential tools of trade.
In her address, Dr Ndlovu said the vehicles belonged to the people and should be used to enhance public health and environmental quality.
She remarked on the importance of community engagement, with the vehicles facilitating outreach efforts and improving the agency’s ability to connect with the communities it served.
“Institutional capacity remains key in the environment of set targets by any organisation,” she said, commending the Government’s initiative to empower ministries and agencies like the EMA.
As the national environmental regulator, EMA carries the critical mission of regulating, monitoring and promoting the sustainable management of natural resources while ensuring environmental protection.
EMA board chair Ambassador Zenzo Nsimbi said the procurement of the 15 vehicles signified a commitment to enhancing environmental monitoring as the agency prepared to finalise its 2021-2025 Strategic Plan.
Ambassador Nsimbi highlighted the alignment of the strategic plan with the National Development Strategy, which prioritised environmental management as crucial for achieving the national vision of an upper-middle-income economy by 2030.
He emphasised that the vehicles would be deployed throughout the country, particularly in districts where they are most needed, reinforcing the agency’s commitment to effective service delivery.
EMA acting director general Mr Christopher Mushava stated that this development coincided with the agency’s focus on finalising NDS1, which is essential for attaining National Vision 2030.
“The vehicles will augment the EMA fleet and increase service delivery in line with Government expectations,” said Mr Mushava.
“They were operational assets meant to strengthen the agency’s regulatory duties in safeguarding the environment.
“We will guard these assets jealously and ensure they serve the agency and the country for a long time,” he affirmed.
The introduction of the vehicles marks a significant advancement for the EMA, empowering the agency to enhance its operational capabilities and fulfil its vital role in environmental management.
