Cyrene High School staff members and students have been commended for their continued exceptional work that has seen the school continue to produce excellent results.

This came out during the school’s annual Speech and Prize Giving Day, which was held yesterday, to honour top achievers in various fields.

The ceremony was held under the theme “At 85, Still Embracing Change, Adapting, and Thriving Through an Evolving Environment.”

The guest of honour was the Anglican Bishop of the Matabeleland region, Reverend Dr Cleophas Lunga.
Speaking at the occasion, the school head Mr Charles Bhebhe, applauded the staff and students for their remarkable achievements in producing excellent results.

“We commend our teaching and non-teaching staff for their teamwork and hard work. We are currently planning to expand our Cyrene Mission to accommodate more girls in the coming years, along with a broader organisational scope.

We aim to complete the girls’ dormitories by next year to increase our capacity.”
Mr Bhebhe highlighted that their pass rates have consistently improved over the years, and they aspire to excel even further.

He encouraged students to explore the arts, given the current emphasis on sciences, to promote diversity. The school plans to introduce Computer-Aided Design (CAD) in the curriculum next year.

Noting the demand for the Cambridge curriculum, he stated, “We intend to introduce one Cambridge class per form to cater to learners who wish to excel in that system.”

“We appreciate the support from parents, SDC members, and partners, including the recent commissioning of a new dining hall. We are also working on completing the girls’ dormitory by 2026,” he added.
Mr Bhebhe also mentioned that their students excel in sports, noting that the public speaking team recently secured second place at the Nationals.

Renowned as one of the top-performing schools in Bulawayo, Cyrene High was established in 1940 and currently has 440 students, including only 30 girls, with an exceptionally high pass rate and a staff of 40 teachers and 7 student teachers.

Dr. Lunga congratulated the prize winners for their hard work and dedication, expressing gratitude to the parents, teachers, and the Anglican Church for their invaluable support.

He emphasised the importance of students engaging in productive activities during their school years, encouraging them to seize every opportunity.

“To our teaching and non-teaching staff, we appreciate your hard work and dedication. We look forward to your continued excellence and commitment to providing quality education,” he stated.

The school applauded the contributions of the girls, who, alongside the boys, significantly contributed to the school’s high pass rate. Sponsored by COBA, the high achievers were rewarded with trophies, tablets, and US$50 prizes to encourage their continued excellence.

The ceremony also celebrated various student talents, including dance and choir performances. In closing, Mr Bhebhe remarked that the new curriculum represents an effort to bring about meaningful change.
