A 24-YEAR-OLD ex-convict, Leonard Mugashi, also known as “Shato”, was arrested after being shot once on the leg as he attempted to evade police arrest in Kwekwe last week in connection with a spate of robberies.
Mugashi, who had recently been released from prison, was caught after trying to rob woman in Mbizo 11.
Midlands Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said police officers, responding to the incident, fired warning shots and gave chase to Mugashi, eventually subduing him
“Police in Kwekwe have arrested a recently released prisoner in connection with a spate of robberies in Kwekwe. The arrest happened on January 29 at about 6pm,” he said.
Insp Mahoko said Mugashi was of no fixed abode, adding that the arrest came about after he was intercepted during the process of an attack on a woman at her house in Mbizo 11, whom he threatened to stab with a knife.
“The suspect tried to run away but could not make it. The determined police officers fired warning shots, calling for him to stop. He continued running and was subdued after being shot once on the knee,” he said.
Insp Mahoko said searches carried out after the arrest led to the recovery of an okapi knife and some clothing items he is alleged to have been wearing during the commission of some robberies in and around Kwekwe.
So far, Insp Mahoko said the suspect has been linked to three robbery cases committed in Mbizo 8, 2 and 22 while in the company of two accomplices who are still at large.
“They were allegedly armed with knives an iron bar and an axe. They struck two of the victims, Zivanai Machekera aged 47 and his wife Estery Faki aged 44 years, who had resisted, with the iron bar.
“From the three houses, they allegedly stole money amounting to US$415 and some clothing items,” he said.
Insp Mahoko commended members of the public for cooperating with the police who are handling the investigations.
“May the support continue in our quest to account for the two suspects who are still outstanding. We also warn criminals that they risk being shot if they confront or resist lawful arrests. Police officers will not hesitate to use force where it is necessary in terms of the law, “ he said.
