FRANCISTOWN, Botswana – Zimbabwe defender Teenage Hadebe has been suspended for one match and will miss Tuesday’s Mukuru 4 Nations Tournament final against Zambia, after a video circulating on social media showed him holding a bottle of whiskey in breach of the team’s camp code of conduct.
The Zimbabwe Football Association confirmed the disciplinary action in a statement, saying a decision had been taken “in line with team regulations” after Hadebe was found to have violated camp rules.
The footage, which spread rapidly online, showed the experienced defender with a whiskey bottle while sitting in a room with several other players including captain Marvellous Nakamba, causing an uproar among football fans and prompting swift action from the association and the Warriors technical team.
ZIFA said Hadebe has since apologised to both the team and the association and “accepted the disciplinary outcome.”
The ban is a significant blow to the Warriors ahead of the final, with Hadebe being one of Zimbabwe’s most reliable defenders. His absence will be felt in what promises to be a hard-fought encounter against Zambia.
ZIFA sought to draw a line under the matter, reaffirming its commitment to “upholding the highest standards of professionalism, discipline and accountability within the national team setup.”
