THE City of Harare says it has identified 465 dilapidated and unsightly properties in the city that are non-compliant with its by-laws.
In a notice issued on Friday, acting town clerk Engineer Phakamile Mabhena Moyo said the buildings were non-compliant in terms of Chapter 2 Sections 48 and 49 of the Model Building by-laws 1977, read together with applicable statutory instruments.
“All commercial, institutional and industrial buildings are required to comply with prevailing laws and regulations relating to approved use, structural safety, appearance and general aesthetics,” read the notice.
“The City of Harare calls upon all affected property owners and building occupants who have previously been served with statutory notices (Abatement Orders) to undertake the required renovation, repainting and refurbishment works and to submit proof of compliance to the city’s architect’s office, building inspectorate room 8.
“In accordance with Chapter 2, Section 44 of the Model Building by-laws 1977, a valid certificate of occupation must accompany all submissions.”
The statement indicated that property owners have been granted a 14-day grace period from the date of publication of the notice to comply.
“Failure will result in enforcement action by the council without further notice,” read the notice.
