THE Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) has given the Harare City Council a 24-hour ultimatum to collect garbage in the capital city.

In a letter, the ZLHR said the local authority should immediately collect refuse at designated public places or face legal action.

“It is our demand that council in terms of its obligations immediately and in any event not less than 24 hours from receiving this letter, attends to the collection of refuse  at designated public places,” the letter read in part.

“Failure to attend to this demand and any future dereliction to collect rubbish at the named areas will leave us with no option, but institute legal proceedings to force you to attend to your statutory obligations. This will be done without any further notice to
yourselves.”

Harare acting town clerk Mabhena Moyo said the council was failing to collect garbage due to a shortage of refuse trucks.

“We have a shortage of refuse trucks as there are only six moving trucks,” Moyo said.

The ZLHR accused the council of neglecting to collect refuse at designated points in the capital.
