Iconic Blue Train returns to Victoria Falls after 12 years

THE legendary Blue Train — Africa’s most luxurious rail experience — has made a historic return to Victoria Falls after a 12-year hiatus, reaffirming Zimbabwe’s standing as a must-visit destination for high-end global travellers.

At exactly 2.45AM, the gleaming royal-blue locomotive with its elegant gold trimmings pulled into the Victoria Falls Railway Station.

On board were more than 30 Japanese tourists and 30 crew members, all eager to witness the majesty of one of the world’s greatest natural wonders.

Dubbed “Africa’s Leading Luxury Train”, the Blue Train is more than just transport — it’s a five-star hotel on wheels.

Its heritage dates back to 1923, when the Union Limited and Union Express services began linking the Cape to the Transvaal in South Africa. Over the decades, the train evolved into a symbol of prestige and sophistication, hosting royalty, presidents and celebrities on its journeys. Today, it remains one of the world’s most exclusive rail experiences, offering a blend of old-world charm and modern indulgence.

From its polished wooden interiors and crystal glassware to panoramic windows framing Africa’s landscapes, the Blue Train delivers an unmatched luxury experience.

Guests are pampered with private suites, personal butler service, and gourmet five-course meals prepared by top chefs. The dining car sets the scene for formal fine dining, while the lounge car offers a refined space to unwind with premium wines and cigars.

The Blue Train last brought tourists to Victoria Falls in 2013, although a trial run without passengers took place in 2021. Its return now marks not only a milestone for the country’s tourism revival but also a signal to the global luxury travel market that Zimbabwe is open and ready to welcome the world.

Upon arrival, the Japanese visitors were whisked to their hotels for a brief rest before embarking on a game drive through Zambezi National Park where they encountered Zimbabwe’s famed wildlife up close, an experience many described as unforgettable.

“We saw Victoria Falls, and it is truly beautiful, a world heritage treasure. The game drive at Zambezi National Park was fascinating for our guests. This was our first charter to Zimbabwe, and I will continue promoting Victoria Falls in Japan,” said Eri Odagiri, chief executive officer of Thompson Tours Japan, the agency behind the trip.

For acting train manager, Musama Tazi, bringing the Blue Train back to Victoria Falls is more than a business move, but it’s a proud moment.

“We are so excited to bring our guests to Africa’s most iconic destination. The Blue Train is the most luxurious train in Africa, and we are promising to bring more people,” she said.

Tazi said the response to the trip has been overwhelming.

“Social media is abuzz with inquiries about our next journey. We will be back in a few weeks with more guests. Our promise remains the same, which is the impeccable five-star service, exquisite meals and unforgettable experiences,” she said.

The next Blue Train excursion to Victoria Falls is expected in the coming weeks. The train’s return is also expected to complement regional tourism initiatives such as the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (Kaza TFCA) and Zimbabwe’s own drive to promote the Victoria Falls–Hwange–Binga tourism corridor. It aligns with the Government’s plans under Vision 2030 to grow the tourism sector into a multi-billion-dollar industry.
