Jah Prayzah cans American tour after visa denial

HARARE – Jah Prayzah has cancelled upcoming Independence Day performances in the United States after being denied a visa, a setback that comes amid new U.S. government guidance aimed at tightening scrutiny of visa applicants’ intentions and online presence.

The artist was scheduled to perform in Washington, D.C., on July 4 and Dallas, Texas, on July 5 as part of his ongoing Ndini Mukudzeyi World Tour. But in a statement released Thursday, Jah Prayzah said a “technical issue” had led to the embassy not issuing visas for him and his group.

He wrote on Facebook: “I write this with a heavy heart. I was ready and excited to meet you in Washington D.C. on July 4th and Dallas on July 5th. I know many of you had already made travel plans, booked hotels, and secured your tickets, and I was just as ready to give you the show you deserve.

“We attended our visa appointments earlier this month, but due to a technical issue on our application forms, we couldn’t proceed. That meant restarting the process and trying to get new appointment dates, and unfortunately, none were available in time.”

While dismissing reports that his visa was denied for political reasons, Jah Prayzah acknowledged that “some things are simply beyond anyone’s control” and praised both the U.S. consulate and American organisers DJ Nhunzi and Xcelerate for trying to assist.

“The U.S. Consulate was supportive and tried to assist in every possible way they could, but some things are simply beyond anyone’s control. I know that some have been trying to push the narrative that Visas were denied, that is not true but, unfortunately, changes nothing at this point,” Jah Prayzah said.

The cancellation coincides with recent updates from the U.S. Department of State emphasizing a more rigorous vetting process for visa applicants. According to the new guidance, consular officers are now required to conduct “comprehensive and thorough vetting, including of applicants’ online presence,” to ensure that individuals do not pose a threat to U.S. citizens or interests.

“The United States must be vigilant during the visa issuance process,” the policy states, adding that applicants must “credibly establish their eligibility” and prove they will engage in activities consistent with the terms of their visa.

Despite the setback, Jah Prayzah confirmed that his Canada shows—scheduled for July 11 in Edmonton and July 12 in Toronto—will go ahead as planned.

“Full refunds will be made for those who bought tickets ahead of time,” he said of the U.S shows, adding that new American tour dates will be announced soon.

“I remain indebted and promise to fulfil this part of the tour in the very near future,” he said.
