BULAWAYO – Highlanders coach Kelvin Kaindu on Wednesday said “there is no smoke without fire” as he appeared resigned to losing Golden Boot favourite Lynoth Chikuhwa and defender Peter Muduhwa to newly-promoted Scottland FC.
The two players – who are out of contract at Highlanders at the end of the season – would join the ambitious Northern Region Division 1 champions as free agents.
Chikuhwa has found the net 16 times this season for the Bulawayo side ahead of the season-ending match with Yadah at Barbourfields on Sunday. His departure would be a blow to Highlanders who have found it increasingly difficult to compete with well-funded mine-owned clubs.
Scottland FC are owned by gold dealer Scott Sakupwanya, who ironically is one of Highlanders’ sponsors through his Better Brands Gold company.
Kaindu, responding to rumours about the two players, told the Bulawayo Chronicle: “Of course when you’re heading towards the end of the season there are many rumours. Sometimes it’s true, we can’t run away from that and we must prepare for it.
“As a coach it’s difficult to comment on things I don’t have facts on. As a club we are yet to receive any formal letter regards the two players. So for now I will leave it as rumours, but there is no smoke without fire.”
Highlanders currently lie sixth in the league and can finish fifth if they beat Yadah and Herentals fail to beat Chicken Inn at home – an overall disappointing season for the club which last won the league in 2006.
