CHRISTMAS cheer filled the maternity ward at Kwekwe General Hospital on Thursday as city leaders paid a special visit to welcome babies born on Christmas Day.
Seven babies, four females and three males had been delivered before 10.00am, bringing joy to families and health workers alike.
According to the maternity ward Sister in Charge, Mary Hita, the first Christmas baby was delivered in the early hours at around 2AM.
“We have had seven babies so far, most of them are girls, and we are still expecting at least two more from mothers who are in waiting. One of the babies was even born on the way to hospital from Rutendo, which shows how special and unexpected these moments can be,” she said.
Kwekwe Mayor, Councillor Albert Zinhanga, accompanied by councilors, visited the ward and presented the newborns with hampers consisting of baby wear and diapers as part of the city’s tradition of recoginising Christmas babies.

“We came today to visit Christmas babies and I am happy that we have quite a number of them. We came with gifts for the first five babies and we really appreciate the role women play in giving birth. I urge the mothers to look after the babies well,” said Cllr Zinhanga.
Hita applauded Kwekwe City Council for remembering the Christmas babies noting the siginificance of the day and the number of girls born.
“Most of the babies are girls, and girls grow families. It is encouraging for the city to come and share this moment with the mothers,” said Hita.
Young mother, Keyla Ruguta, could not hide her excitement after giving birth to a healthier baby on Christmas Day.
“I am elated to give birth to a healthy baby on Christmas Day. I really appreciate the gift, it goes a long way in comforting my baby,” she said.
As celebrations continued across the city, the arrival of Christmas babies added a special meaning to the festive day, symbolising hope, new beginnings and the gift of life for families in Kwekwe.
