Man, 21, commits suicide after mum reprimands him for wasting cooking oil

BULAWAYO- A 21-year-old man from Bulawayo’s Cowdray Park suburb died after drinking rat poison in a fit of rage following a dispute with his mother over spilled cooking oil, police said on Tuesday.

Thabiso Ndlovu died at Mpilo Central Hospital on July 14, two days after ingesting the toxic substance at his family home.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said Ndlovu rowed with his 41-year-old mother at around 1PM on July 12 after he was reprimanded for wasting cooking oil.

“The warning did not go down well with the now deceased, who got angry and drank rat killer poison. His mother saw him vomiting and when she inquired, he admitted to having consumed the poison,” said Msebele.

An ambulance was called and Ndlovu was rushed to Mpilo Hospital where he was admitted under observation.

Two days later, on the morning of July 14, his mother received a call from the hospital informing her that her son had died.

Police said investigations are underway, but no foul play is suspected.

The incident adds to a growing number of distress-linked suicides in Bulawayo, with authorities urging communities to seek mental health support and resolve domestic tensions peacefully.
