Missing Zimbabwean man, 47, found drowned in Welsh river

LONDON, United Kingdom – A 47-year-old Zimbabwean man reported missing last Saturday has been found dead from possible drowning in the northern Welsh town of Llangollen, police said.

Clifford Sibanda’s body was pulled from the River Dee close to the Chainbridge Hotel.

A postmortem to find the possible cause of death has been ordered.

A spokesperson for North Wales Police said on Wednesday: “Whilst formal identification is yet to take place, his family are being supported by specialist officers and the local coroner has been informed.”

In their initial appeal for Sibanda, who was from Birkenhead near Liverpool, police said they believed he travelled to Llangollen on Saturday, March 8, taking a bus from Chester Train Station.

Sibanda, originally from Lupane in Matabeleland North, had lived in the United Kingdom for nearly 25 years.

He was declared missing after walkers found his backpack, train ticket and bank cards on a rock on the edges of the River Dee. They handed over the items to the police.

Police said among the items found were clothes that he is believed to have worn to the location, before changing into swimming trunks and getting in the water.

Sibanda’s family told ZimLive they had no idea what he was doing at the river. They also said he was a “decent swimmer” which made them wonder what dangers were lurking in the river which stopped him from swimming to safety.

Sibanda’s ex-wife lives in Birmingham, England, with their seven-year-old twin children.
