HARARE – A 22-year-old man who allegedly killed an intruder has been charged with murder.
Benson Macharangwanda, of Chitungwiza, was almost stabbed during the incident at 4.30AM on December 2, a court heard.
He appeared before a Harare magistrate on Monday and was remanded in custody awaiting a High Court indictment.
The National Prosecuting Authority said Macharangwanda had an anti-theft alarm on his phone and he woke up when it was activated. He had US$250 placed in the phone’s pouch.
“He saw the now deceased fishing it out of the room through the window,” the court heard.
Macharangwanda then got up and pursued the now deceased, who was not named in court, guided by the sound of the anti-theft alarm.
He caught up with the man and demanded he hands over the phone.
“The now deceased indicated that the cell phone had dropped inside his room. The accused person took the now deceased to his room and a fight ensued and the now deceased produced a knife attempting to stab the accused person,” prosecutors alleged.
He however blocked the knife after his landlady shouted to alert him of the imminent attack.
The court heard Macharangwanda managed to retrieve his phone from the deceased’s shorts.
The burglar was escorted out of the premises before he started complaining of injuries he had sustained.
He was taken by his relatives to Chitungwiza Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival.
