PRESIDENT Mnangagwa will today preside over the burial of the National Hero Cde Luke Mushore, a revered figure who fought in the liberation struggle and is a former Member of Parliament for Muzarabani South constituency.

The veteran nationalist, who passed away last week at the age of 76, will be laid to rest at the National Heroes Acre in a ceremony befitting his contributions to Zimbabwe’s independence.

Cde Mushore’s body arrived at Charles Gumbo Barracks in Harare yesterday from his farm in Centenary. It was expected to lie in state ahead of burial today.

In an interview with The Herald, Retired Colonel Onward Tokoda, the Procurement Director in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, confirmed that all arrangements were in place to give the liberation war icon a dignified send-off.

“Cde Mushore, affectionately known as Cde Dick Joboringo, will be buried at the National Heroes Acre in Harare and President Mnangagwa is set to preside over the burial,” he said. “We are fully prepared to bid farewell to our late national hero. Transport will be available at the usual pick-up points in Harare to ferry mourners to the National Heroes Acre.”

Cde Mushore played a pivotal role in Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle.  He is also a former Zanu PF provincial chairman for Mashonaland Central.

His death marks the loss of yet another stalwart of the revolution, whose sacrifices helped shape the nation’s history.

Government officials, senior Zanu PF members, war veterans and ordinary citizens are expected to gather at the national shrine to pay their last respects.

Mourners are urged to gather at the designated pick-up points by mid-morning, with the burial ceremony set to commence in the early afternoon.
