POLICE have intensified festive season road safety and crime prevention operations, with Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba leading enforcement campaigns that resulted in the arrest of pirate taxi operators and transporters involved in the illegal movement of cattle along Harare-Masvingo Road.

Comm-Gen Mutamba on Friday led a team of senior officers during a road safety campaign in Masvingo Province when the arrests were effected as part of a broader nationwide effort by the Zimbabwe Republic Police to curb traffic violations, crime and unsafe transport practices during the busy holiday period.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that several suspects were arrested during the operation and were expected to appear in court facing various charges.

“The Commissioner-General of Police, Stephen Mutamba, conducted a road safety campaign in Masvingo Province at the 287km peg along the Harare-Masvingo Road between 10am and 1pm.

“During the campaign, the Commissioner-General coordinated the arrest of pirate taxis, illegal movement of cattle by transporters, and also interacted with long-distance bus drivers and passengers,” Comm Nyathi said.

Comm-Gen Mutamba later conducted a similar road safety exercise along the Harare–Masvingo Road near Mvuma, accompanied by senior and junior police officers.

In Harare, Police Deputy Commissioner-General Learn Ncube also led a separate road safety and crime awareness campaign as part of the festive season operations.  He was accompanied by the Officer Commanding Harare Province, Commissioner Maxwell Chikunguru, and other senior officers.

Commissioner Chikunguru addressed the public and passengers at Simon Muzenda Bus Terminus during the launch of the Harare Province Festive Season Crime Awareness and Road Safety Campaign, urging commuters and transport operators to comply with the law to avoid accidents and criminal activity.

Similar festive season crime awareness and road safety campaigns have been launched by police commanders across all provinces, signalling a coordinated national approach to public safety during the holiday period.

Last week, Comm-Gen Mutamba also launched a rebranded ZRP National Highway Patrol Unit, deploying five high-powered double-cab Ford Ranger vehicles to strengthen traffic policing across the country during the festive season and beyond.

The new patrol teams will be equipped with body-worn cameras for both drivers and assistants as part of an electronic traffic management system aimed at enhancing accountability and enforcement on the roads.
