Police detective gunned down in shootout with armed gang

BULAWAYO – A police detective was shot and killed by armed robbery suspects they were pursuing on Thursday, police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed Friday.

In a statement, Nyathi said police have opened investigations into the fatal shooting of Detective Constable Cassandra Hove of CID Homicide Bulawayo in the tour of duty.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that investigations are being conducted in connection with the tragic and unfortunate death of Detective Constable Cassandra Hove of CID Homicide Bulawayo on 6th March 2025 while pursuing armed robbery suspects,” Nyathi said.

“The shooting incident occurred at Harbek area, Pumula South, Bulawayo.”

The police spokesperson relayed Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba to the family of the slain cop adding that “comprehensive investigations are underway with a view of establishing what actually transpired”.

Nyathi said the Zimbabwe Republic Police would not go back in the fight against armed robberies and other violent crimes in the country.

He appealed to the public to volunteer information that could help police successfully investigate criminal activities in the country.
