In a series of coordinated operations, police have intercepted large consignments of dagga (mbanje) and unregistered medicines, leading to multiple arrests across the country.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that two suspected drug dealers were arrested along the Harare-Beitbridge Road after they were found transporting 310kg of dagga and 1 600 bottles of Broncleer cough syrup, commonly known as bronco.

The suspects, identified as Leonard Mushava (34) and Opprah Ndavambi (30), were intercepted at the 80-kilometre peg along the Beitbridge-Masvingo Road while travelling in a Toyota Hilux vehicle.

“Police also recovered 1 050 bottles of Astra Pain Cough Syrup from the vehicle,” Comm Nyathi said.

In a separate case in Chipinge, police acting on a tip-off arrested Tafadzwa Mare (33) at Chiutani Village, Ngungunyana, on January 3, 2026, for unlawful cultivation of 110 dagga plants.

The crackdown follows earlier arrests, including that of Johannes Ndarowa (41), who was arrested at a car park in Sakubva, Mutare, on December 30, 2025, for possession of sachets of dagga and bottles of Broncleer, Astra Pain and Benylin cough syrups. He has since appeared in court and was remanded in custody.

Another suspect, Ivan Gombere (36), was arrested at the three-kilometre peg along the Macheke-Murewa Road for unlawful possession of similar contraband. He was aboard a Nissan AD Van.

Also on December 30, 2025, police at a roadblock along the Harare-Chirundu Road intercepted a Nissan Caravan kombi and arrested Toriane Pemba Ngoma (32) for possession of unregistered medicines. Recovered items included Sildenafil Citrate tablets, Amoxicillin tablets, Confo liquid and Mebendazole tablets.

In Mutoko, police arrested Brighton Mazarura (33), Aleck Kadhoro (32) and Patience Nyaumba (37) on Christmas Day for unlawful possession of dangerous drugs at Home Industries. Recovered items included 73 sachets of crystal meth, dagga and drug paraphernalia.

Commissioner Nyathi commended the public for providing tips and urged continued cooperation to combat drug and substance abuse.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police will continue to intensify operations targeting drug syndicates and peddlers. We urge the public to report any suspicious activities,” he said.
