SHAMVA – Shamva Gold Mine, a subsidiary of Kuvimba Mining House (KMH), has invested more than US$500,000 in community development projects over the past two years, with management pledging to scale up support in health, education, empowerment and infrastructure.
Speaking at the commissioning of service delivery equipment for Chaminuka Rural District Council at the weekend, Shamva Gold Mine general manager Gift Mapakame said the company’s operations were anchored on community upliftment.
“We bear the responsibility to care for our host communities while preserving the national assets of the country,” Mapakame said. “We have worked with local communities and institutions to expand essential services, partnering with our local authority and other stakeholders.”
Mapakame said infrastructure development remained the mine’s top priority, citing the importance of the Shamva–Bindura Highway, which connects the town to the provincial capital and supports local commerce.
“Through partnerships with local authorities and the parent ministry, we keep this road serviced all year round, enabling economic utilisation that contributes to the GDP of this province,” he said.
In health, the mine has committed to upgrading Shamva Hospital, which serves as a referral centre for 20 surrounding clinics. A US$34,000 laundry facility is nearing completion, while a US$20,000 mortuary upgrade has already been finalised. The mine is also upgrading wards and constructing new ablution facilities.
In addition, Shamva Gold Mine has invested US$24,000 in the first phase of upgrading the Wadzanai sewer trunk and rolled out a mobile wellness programme to deliver healthcare to hard-to-reach communities.
“We are very privileged to be part of this community,” Mapakame said.
Guest of honour at the ceremony, Mashonaland Central Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Christopher Magomo, applauded the mine’s contribution, describing the projects as a clear demonstration of private sector commitment to national development.
