Zimbabwe 0-0 South Africa
DURBAN – Zimbabwe and South Africa played out a hard-fought 0–0 draw in Durban on Friday in a contest that showcased both competitive spirit and mutual respect between the two southern African neighbours.
Zimbabwe were already eliminated from World Cup final qualification contention, while South Africa had all to play for in this penultimate round of Group C fixtures.
The encounter, played in front of a lively and mixed crowd at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium, was marked by a sense of camaraderie rarely seen in international football. Supporters from both nations filled the stands with song and colour, creating a festive atmosphere that reflected the deep cultural and sporting ties between two countries.
On the field, Zimbabwe’s veteran goalkeeper Washington Arubi produced a standout performance, keeping his side in contention with several crucial saves. His composure and leadership at the back proved vital as the Warriors weathered waves of South African pressure, particularly in the closing stages of the match.
South Africa displayed resilience and determination, controlling possession and pushing forward relentlessly in search of a winner. Despite their dominance, Bafana Bafana struggled to find a way past Arubi and a disciplined Zimbabwean defence.
The Warriors’ task became more difficult in the second half when Knowledge Musona received a red card for a late challenge, leaving Zimbabwe to play the final minutes with ten men. Nevertheless, the visitors remained organised and held firm to secure a valuable draw.
South Africa’s Mbekezeli Mbokazi saw red late on as both teams finished with 10 men.
At the final whistle, players from both sides exchanged handshakes and embraces, symbolising the mutual respect and sportsmanship that defined the contest.
While neither team managed to find the back of the net, the night was a celebration of southern African football and the unity of two proud nations.
