State assisted funeral for Sikhonjwa after outpouring of grief

BULAWAYO – The late entertainer Babongile Sikhonjwa has been granted a state-assisted funeral by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, a minister announced on Thursday.

Judith Ncube, the minister for Bulawayo, told mourners at the Sikhonjwa family home in Richmond that the government had paid $10,000 to the former Star FM presenter’s family to cover funeral costs.

The intervention followed an outpouring of grief across the country as friends paid tribute to the multi-talented star who graced many stages – as MC, stand-up comedian, cultural activist, singer and DJ.

Sikhonjwa died suddenly at the age of 49 on Sunday morning.

A memorial service is being held at the Amphitheatre in Bulawayo on Friday morning before burial in Mlowezi, Gwanda district, on Saturday.

Qhubani Moyo, Sikhonjwa’s old boss at Skyz Metro FM, was named as pointman for receiving cash contributions by the family. He can be contacted on +263772748000.
