Suspect wanted for killing 2 police detectives arrested by community in Bikita

HARARE – An armed robbery suspect wanted for the fatal shooting of two police detectives in Zaka on Sunday has been arrested, police have confirmed.

Daniel Munyanyi, 50, was captured by residents of Nyika in Bikita on Monday afternoon while allegedly in hiding, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said.

“The arrest was effected by members of the public. The firearm used in the commission of the murder cases has also been recovered,” Nyathi said in a statement, commending the people of Nyika for working with police to secure the suspect’s arrest.

Munyanyi, who was wanted in connection with a string of armed robberies in Harare and Zaka, had reportedly fled to his rural home in Ndume Village, Zaka.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department’s homicide division in Harare had tracked him there and were moving in to make an arrest at around 5AM on Sunday when Munyanyi allegedly opened fire.

Two detectives — Bernard Chimbeke, 37, and McKenzie Chitsowe, 43 — were killed in the shootout. Three other detectives were wounded, one of whom lost a leg that was later amputated in hospital.
